It is so easy today to become distracted from the directions of God. Life is full of temptations, alternatives, and relationships that detour us from hearing the voice of God speak into our situations. Yet in the times we are living in, the devil is roaring around us, creating an atmosphere of volatility that is just waiting to steal a destiny, thwart a blessing, or clog up a discerning ear to God’s voice. It only takes a momentary breach to alter a course.
King Solomon gave us great wisdom for the journey in Proverbs 4:23 “Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.” The complete Jewish translation bring in the idea of above all else, a sign that something of significance is coming next. Solomon is instructing us to watch over, blockade, and guard with fidelity our heart. Fidelity meaning guard with faithfulness and loyalty. Interesting, we are to guard our heart with “loyalty” to His word and the wisdom found therein!!
If we think about all that is conceived in our heart, then we can begin to understand how important it is to be guarded with faithfulness and fidelity. Our atttitudes, ambitions, actions, are conceived in our heart. Solomon advised us that it is a well-spring of life that comes forth from it.
Solomon is advising us that we must allow create a place of security for our heart. He uses the word diligence here. This word brings the meaning of a guard post, or a place of confinement such as a prison. This is some pretty serious security measures. Yet God knew our hearts would create a place of vulnerability.
Our flesh is vulnerable, we can seriously believe we are about serving the Lord, and yet be so far from the correct road God had for us. In fact we may even be on the right road, but miss a stop sign due to a distraction along the trip. We must stay spiritually strong and focused.
We also guard our hearts, when we are cautious about what we allow to reside in our hearts. Proverbs 23:7 “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” We must guard over the things we allow ourselves to think and focus on. Philippians 4:8 gives us great guidance on what to think on. “ 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there isany virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”
As we head out in the direction we have received from God, we must guard our thought life. It is so easy to become derailed. It only takes one thought of I am not good enough to complete this so how could God us me to throw a believer right off track. Our thoughts are a huge battleground the enemy loves to torment Christ followers with. For as we think in our heart, so are we; I can either think I am God’s Princess or I can think I am a worthless person. Each one of these thoughts will create a different outcome if allowed to stick in the brain cells for even a moment.
Paul has given us a list of things to think about that will help keep our spiritual focus honed and fine tuned to the voice of God. Remember to guard your heart with fidelity or loyalty to His word, and become a breach stealer! A discernful ear to the voice of God will bring forth a spring of life for His kingdom.
